Close-Up: Teaching with Biofacts
Burleigh Lockwood, biologist and Educator, Fresno Chaffee Zoo
What’s the difference between a lion and a polar bear? Biofacts offer an opportunity for zoo visitors to have an in-depth understanding of the animals they are seeing. But engaging visitors with biofacts can sometimes be challenging. We’ll focus on how to address biofact origin, how to optimize biofacts as teaching aids, how to identify unique characteristics in biofacts from different taxonomic groups, and how to best preserve your biofact collection.
Burleigh Lockwood earned her BA in ecology at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and studied for her Masters in Wildlife Biology at CSU Frenso. She was a wildlife biologist with California Fish and Game and the U.S. Forest Service before joining the Education Department of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo in 1993. She gives presentations to thousands of
school children and adults, and is an expert on using biofacts in education.
